IELTS Writing Task 2 – Less Packaged Products

Prompt: Some people think the manufacturers or shopping malls should sell less packaged products and others argue that people have the responsibility to buy products with less packaging. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Paragraph 01: Introduction

In the ongoing debate about who bears the primary responsibility for reducing waste by minimizing packaging, whether it is corporate entities or consumer awareness, I believe that both parties share the responsibility for creating a more sustainable environment, and cooperation between these two groups is crucial.

Paragraph 02: View 1

Looking at it from one perspective, certain products, especially consumables like fruits and vegetables, often come with excessive plastic, styrofoam, and paper packaging. However, this is avoidable, and natural packaging alternatives can be utilized. For example, some supermarkets unnecessarily wrap these perishable products in plastic, which is unnecessary since people typically peel the skin, rendering the plastic packaging redundant. Moreover, as these products will eventually rot inside the plastic, it only delays the process and makes it harder to detect, ultimately leading to more waste.

Paragraph 03: View 2

On the other hand, some argue that the responsibility falls on consumers to avoid purchasing overly packaged items, thereby pressuring manufacturers to reduce their packaging.  For instance, meat products do not necessarily require excessive packaging, as paper can absorb enough moisture and reduce the need for excessive cellophane wrapping. By voicing their preferences, consumers can lead merchants to follow their requests, resulting in more sustainable packaging and a conscious decision to make a difference.

Paragraph 04: Opinion

In my opinion, both manufacturers and consumers should collaborate to reduce excessive packaging. Companies can conduct surveys or research to identify products that do not require excessive packaging. Furthermore, consumers need to consistently remind manufacturers of their packaging preferences, which will serve as valuable data to drive this agenda. This approach would help eliminate unnecessary packaging and allow consumers to influence the market toward better packaging practices.

Paragraph 05: Conclusion

In conclusion, a distinction should be made between products that require minimal packaging and those that need more protection. Communication between manufacturers and consumers facilitated through surveys, can play a significant role in reducing waste and benefiting the environment.
