IELTS Academic Writing Task 1: Sugar Production
IELTS WRITING TASK 1 – Academic
Source: Cambridge IELTS 16 Test 02
You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.
The diagram below shows the manufacturing process for making sugar from sugar cane. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
You should write at least 150 words.
Version 1
The process diagram illustrates the seven major steps involved in producing sugar from sugar cane, which can be extracted in two ways. Overall, the production of sugar involves extraction, purification, reduction, and separation.
Firstly, sugar cane can be harvested by a machine that cuts it in bulk or by hand using a machete. The cane is usually harvested when it is around 12 to 18 months old, and then the extraction process can begin.
Next, the sugar cane is fed into machinery wheels to extract its juice. Once the juice is collected, it is purified using a limestone filter that passes through the liquid in a funnel shape. After the purification, the liquid undergoes a cooking stage where it is reduced using an evaporator machine. Using centrifugal force, the crystal is separated from the syrup. Finally, the crystal is dried and cooled, resulting in granulated sugar as the finished product.
Version 2
The process diagram illustrates the seven major steps involved in producing sugar from sugar cane, which can be extracted in two ways. Overall, the production of sugar involves extraction, purification, reduction, and separation.
Initially, farmers verify the maturity of the cane, which typically takes around 12 to 18 months, before beginning the harvest. Two methods of harvesting are available: a sugarcane harvester that cuts the cane by machine or a manual process in which a person uses a machete to cut the cane.
Once the canes are harvested, they are fed into a juicing machine that crushes the canes and extracts the sweet juice. The juice is then purified using a limestone filter that looks like a funnel. After that, the juice is boiled in an evaporator to reduce excess liquid. A device that uses centrifugal force separates the crystals from the syrup. Finally, the granulated sugar is dried and cooled before being packed.
