IELTS Writing Task 2 – Increase of Petrol

Increasing the price of petrol is the best way to solve growing traffic and pollution problems. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
What other measures do you think might be effective?

Many often suggest that increasing the price of gasoline can alleviate traffic congestion and, as a result, reduce carbon emissions and noise pollution. However, based on historical evidence, I strongly disagree with this notion. Instead, I believe that rehabilitating public transportation systems and promoting teleworking are far more effective solutions.

The price of gasoline has been steadily rising since the 1980s, yet people continue to rely on it, leading to a surge in car purchases. Gasoline is considered a commodity that people need regardless of its price. Therefore, further increasing the price would not result in a decrease in traffic, nor would it effectively address pollution issues such as noise and air pollution caused by cars.

To alleviate traffic congestion, the focus should be on reducing the number of cars on the road. This can be accomplished by revitalizing public transport and promoting teleworking. The government can invest in enhancing public transportation infrastructure and ensuring its safety and maintenance. Additionally, incentivizing companies to implement teleworking policies would encourage employees to reduce car dependency.

By implementing these measures, the number of cars on the road would diminish. Private car owners would have more confidence in public transit when they see that it is readily available and properly maintained. Employees would also reduce their use of cars by opting to work remotely. As a result, the reduction in car usage would lead to decreased gas emissions, thereby improving air quality and reducing noise pollution.

In conclusion, the idea of increasing the price of gasoline lacks substantial evidence to support its claims. Past instances of gasoline price increases have not resulted in reduced traffic or pollutant reduction. Therefore, investing in teleworking opportunities and improving public transportation systems provide a more viable approach to resolving these issues.
