IELTS General Training Task 2: Teaching Children at Home

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task. Write about the following topic

Some people believe that teaching children at home is best for a child’s development while others think that it is important for children to go to school. Discuss the advantages of both methods and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Write at least 250 words.

It is claimed that a child’s development would improve if they are homeschooled while others suggest that traditional school is still the best. In my opinion, both systems have advantages such as personal development and knowledge acquisition but traditional learning is still the best because it also provides how to be sociable.

A child could learn at his/her own pace at home so they could finish particular lessons quickly and spend more time on difficult lessons. In addition, the student can ask the questions directly without hesitation so all the questions could be answered or requests can be made to repeat a particular lesson. For instance, in a regular school where the teachers need to follow a particular lesson plan and need to finish on particular days without checking if all students could understand the lesson. Also, asking questions to the teacher is a challenge because it can interrupt the other students so some just decide not to ask or request the teacher.

When it comes to a traditional school, students can learn different things because of the vast resources such as books in the library, laboratories, and courts for physical education compared to the resources of homeschool which is limited. In addition, students could also learn with different teachers especially to their fellow students which are not possible for homeschooled students. Furthermore, students will feel a sense of urgency as the topic changes so they need to study harder in order not to fall behind. It is also an advantage to have some competition in the class so they could also be motivated to be better.

In my opinion, homeschooling is good since it can focus the student and they can study intensively, however, this has limitations because as a child grows, it requires further nourishment from different people and that is where the traditional school starts. Regular schools will develop a child’s personality and learn how to interact with other people that they can be used when they become adults.

In conclusion, two methods of learning have both advantages, as one can give concentrate on studying and the other is the vast resources. However, between the two, traditional school is still the best as many individuals can help shape the child’s mind.
