CEFR B1 Level: The Intermediate Stage to Fluency

Okay, so you’ve hit B1 – nice work! You’re no longer a beginner, but you’re not yet fully fluent. Think of this as the “intermediate” level – you’re getting better at communicating and handling more complicated stuff in English. You’re moving past the basics and can start having conversations about things like your work, your opinions, and your future plans.

Key Skills:

At B1, you’ve built a solid foundation, and now you’re adding new layers to your skills. Here’s what you can do:

  • Reading: You can read texts that aren’t too simple. You’ll understand most of what you read in newspapers, books, or online articles, especially if it’s about familiar topics.
  • Writing: Writing at B1 is more about sharing your thoughts and ideas clearly. You’ll write letters, short essays, or reports about things that matter to you. It’s not perfect, but it’s getting better!
  • Speaking: You’re more comfortable speaking and can manage conversations on a wider range of topics. You can explain your opinions, talk about your experiences, and even express hopes for the future. You might still need some help with tricky words, but you’re doing much better.
  • Listening: You can understand most of what people say in daily situations, like at the store or in a meeting. If the topic is familiar, you won’t miss much. You can follow news reports, podcasts, or TV shows that aren’t too difficult.

Example Uses:

At B1, you can go beyond simple requests. For example, when traveling, you can ask about train schedules, give directions, or explain what you want in more detail. Maybe you’re talking to a friend about your hobbies – you can describe why you like certain things or what you plan to do in the future.

Resources:

To keep pushing forward, check out resources like Cambridge English B1 for practice tests and exercises. Apps like Memrise or Busuu can help with vocabulary and speaking practice. Don’t forget about books – English Grammar in Use by Raymond Murphy is a great one for improving your grammar.

Keep practicing, and you’ll see how much more confident you become at B1! You’re almost there!
